On Augst 5th at 6:35 this morning, during torrential rainfall, Westport Fire Department was dispatched to the Merritt Parkway northbound for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Engine 6, Rescue 3 and the Shift Commander responded to the call. The vehicle was reported to be down an embankment with extrication possible, so an extra engine was added for manpower. The first arriving unit confirmed a car down an embankment and the car had impacted a tree on the driver’s side. There was significant intrusion into the passenger compartment of the car due to the impact with the tree. One patient was trapped inside the car. A protective hose line was stretched by Engine 6. Rescue 3 and Engine 2 set up for extrication of the passenger using hydraulic rescue tools. The passenger side door was removed quickly and the occupant was removed from the vehicle into EMS care. Fire Department units cleared the scene at 0710.
We would like to remind everyone to take extreme caution when driving in inclement weather. Roadways can become slick with just a small amount of rainfall, particularly after a long dry spell.
