  • Extrication on the Sherwood Island Connector
    Posted On: Jul 14, 2017
At 11:56am on Friday July 14 2017, the Westport Fire Department along with Westport EMS and Westport Police were called for a motor vehicle accident on the Sherwood Island Connector in the vicinity of the transfer station. Initial reports stated there was a multi-vehicle accident with possible extrication. The initial fire response was 1 engine, 1 rescue, and the Shift Commander. An additional engine was added following the report of extrication. The first arriving engine confirmed a three vehicle accident with all vehicles off the roadway. The first arriving engine deployed a protective hose line for potential fire suppression and assessed the patients. It was determined that one person was trapped in a vehicle and that extrication from the vehicle was required. Upon arrival of the Rescue, extrication commenced. The Rescue crew stabilized the vehicle, utilized the hydraulic cutters, reciprocating saws and hydraulic spreaders (“Jaws of Life”). The occupant was extricated, treated, and turned over to EMS for continued treatment and transport to a medical facility. Five additional patients were treated by personnel on scene and transported to medical facilities by Westport EMS. The last fire unit cleared at 2:05pm.
