Earlier this morning, Westport Fire Department received notification of a motor vehicle accident with injuries, with possible extrication required on Route 15 Southbound between Fairfield and Westport. Two Engines, Rescue 3 and the Shift Commander responded and due to the location of the accident, Fairfield Fire Department was also notified and sent apparatus to the scene.
The first Fire Department unit arrived at 08:08am and found a single vehicle on the embankment close to the North Avenue overpass. The vehicle had rolled over and the driver, who was the sole occupant in the vehicle, was trapped inside. Westport and Fairfield firefighters worked together to assess the patient, stabilize the vehicle and used hydraulic rescue tools from both departments to perform the extrication of the driver. Route 15 Southbound was shut down for a short time in the area of the accident while firefighters performed the extrication.
The driver was removed from the vehicle at 08:29am and transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services for transport to hospital.
The last Fire Department unit left the scene at 09:12am and Route 15 was reopened to traffic.
As a reminder to everyone, please use extra caution when driving during periods of inclement weather. Leave extra space between vehicles, slow down and never use your phone or other devices that will cause distraction while driving.
